Psychosomatic Diseases: Prevention Through Integrity and Complementary Medicine – Yoga
Why is yoga effective in preventing and treating psychosomatic diseases? How connected are the body and mind in the development of these diseases? To what extent do negative emotions trigger the release of inflammatory substances that can cause organic damage? Do anxiety, stress, loneliness, insomnia, and depression manifest as physical symptoms? Can chronicity lead to disease, affect longevity, and impact our DNA? How much can yoga and meditation help us?
Many have experienced bodily symptoms, undergone all possible medical tests, and found no answers because the results were negative. The organ may be fine, but its function is altered, causing unpleasant and sometimes disabling symptoms. Why?
Problems such as gastrointestinal disorders, recurrent muscle tension, pain, back pain, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases, skin disorders, cystitis, chronic headaches, and other conditions are triggered by inflammation that accumulates over time (low-grade inflammation) due to factors like stress, anxiety, emotional trauma, or other psychological influences. The way we experience and internalize external stimuli also plays an important role.
Psychosomatic diseases involve emotional, mental, or psychological factors influencing the physical body, often causing pain or other symptoms not fully explainable by physiological causes. Psychosomatics seeks to provide answers to symptoms that lack medical explanations (MUS, Medically Unexplained Symptoms).
Cytokines, proteins produced by the immune system, are essential for defending against infections and repairing tissue. However, excessive production can damage tissues and organs. Studies in the planet’s blue zones have highlighted factors contributing to longevity: a lifestyle with a predominantly plant-based diet rich in legumes, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, fulfilling social relationships, contact with nature, physical activity, stress management, and having a purpose in life. Epigenetic studies show how the environment and lifestyle can influence our genes without altering the DNA sequence, and these changes can be inherited by future generations. Negative emotions like anger, fear, and sadness increase the immune response and cytokine levels, while positive emotions have an anti-inflammatory effect. The body, mind, and emotions are strongly interconnected, and if each part interacted harmoniously like an orchestra, disease would not exist. Yoga is particularly effective in preventing or treating psychosomatic diseases because it acts on multiple levels. The body is not just matter but a union of different layers, or Koshas (physical, energetic, emotional, mental, spiritual). The countless tools handed down by the wise, now validated by science, help create synergy between these layers, re-establishing psychophysical balance. Through yoga practices, it is possible to purify the body, mind, emotions, and subconscious and unconscious layers, generating a harmonious energy field and a sense of union and widespread well-being.
